Implant Connect℠ Launched through Collaboration between MedicAlert Foundation and Champion Medical Technologies

New Medical Device Registry Service Empowers Patients and Enhances Patient Safety

WASHINGTON, DC (May 26, 2011) – MedicAlert® Implant Connect℠, a new service which aims to improve the safety of patients with medical device implants by linking the patient to their own implant data, launched today at the National Patient Safety Foundation’s Patient Safety Congress. Implant Connect℠ is a combined effort of MedicAlert Foundation and Champion Medical Technologies. The service empowers patients and improves patient safety while complementing the FDA’s Unique Device Identification (UDI) initiative.

MedicAlert Implant Connect℠ enables patients to enroll in the registry service so that their medical device information is always available when needed most. Combined with MedicAlert Foundation’s live 24/7 emergency response service, which provides real-time access to patient medical information, Implant Connect℠ will help to improve patient care in multiple scenarios, including medical emergencies and revision surgery. Equally important, it will provide peace of mind to patients and their families by ensuring key information on their implanted device(s) is readily available. In addition, this solution is designed to solve a continuing problem for patients, providers, and device manufacturers on how to effectively track patients and their devices when there is a medical device product recall or some other critical issue related to an implanted device. In medical emergencies, Implant Connect℠ will improve patient safety by ensuring timely information on the nature and type of device is readily available to first responders and emergency department staff for use in treatment decisions.

The corporate mission of Champion Medical Technologies (CMT), which provides UDITracker® software, is to help hospitals manage and track all implantable devices. “CMT had been searching for a partner to assist in fulfilling our mission of improving visibility of medical devices from manufacturer to patient. MedicAlert Foundation was the perfect fit to close the gap between the hospital and patient with their history of addressing patient safety,” said Peter I. Casady, President and CEO of Champion Medical Technologies.

“We continually seek innovative ways to empower patients to help improve their care and our joint effort with Champion Medical Technologies brings a new level of safety to patients with implanted devices” said Andrew B. Wigglesworth, President & CEO of MedicAlert Foundation.

Champion Medical Technologies partners with MedicAlert Foundation to Improve Patient SafetyAbout MedicAlert Foundation
Established in 1956, MedicAlert Foundation pioneered the use of medical IDs and systems to relay vital medical information to emergency responders on behalf of its members so they receive faster and safer treatment. Today, MedicAlert provides the functionality of an e-health information exchange through an innovative combination of a unique patient identifier linked to an emergency medical information record and a live 24/7 emergency response service. MedicAlert medical IDs alert emergency personnel to a member’s primary health conditions, medications, and/or implanted medical devices. In addition to its live 24/7 emergency response service, MedicAlert Foundation also provides family and caregiver notification so that members can be reunited with their loved ones. MedicAlert services are available around the world through a network of international nonprofit affiliated organizations licensed by the Foundation. Learn more at www.medicalert.org.

GraftTracker® Simplifies Tissue Tracking Process at SoutheastHEALTH

GraftTracker® was a vast improvement for our facility. We went from a paper log book that lacked consistency to an electronic record of all implantable devices. With the click of a mouse, we are able to verify the inventory on hand and inventory used versus manually flipping through page after page of handwritten entries. The ease of use made the transition seamless and allowed a complete transformation of protocol in less than 2 days. In addition, the support team behind GraftTracker® further enhances the ease and reliability of the system. Our facility would highly recommend this program to anyone wishing to simplify the tissue tracking process.”

Champion Medical Technologies Announces New Implant Tracking Software to Address Patient Recall Notification Challenges in Hospitals and Improve Patient Safety

Champion Medical Technologies just released their newest healthcare application, UDITracker®. UDITracker® helps hospitals manage and track medical devices while improving patient safety.

Champion Medical Technologies today announced the release of their newest healthcare application, UDITracker®. This enhanced program addresses the current challenges hospitals face in managing medical device recalls. It also identifies recalled devices on the shelf in hospitals by specific location ensuring their prompt removal, improving patient safety. It also brings hospitals into compliance in anticipation of upcoming federal legislation requiring the tracking of all Unique Device Identifiers (UDI’s). UDITracker® is a manufacturer to patient inventory tracking system utilizing Software as a Service technology. It is now available to all departments within a hospital to standardize the procedures of tracking medical devices throughout the institution.

Inventory and recall management, along with the associated costs and risk/liability to hospitals, represent an increasing challenge to the healthcare industry. New laws will require every medical device company in America to “register” every lot, serial or other unique device identifier (UDI) for every implantable device sold. But will hospitals be able to easily identify the patients that ultimately received these implants? Surprisingly, most current systems used by hospitals are only patient centric, allowing users to search by a patient ID or Medical Record Number, but are not capable of searching for a specific lot/serial/UDI attached to the recipient. “With UDITracker, we are targeting the gap between the implanted medical device and patient, “ said Pete Casady, CEO, Champion Medical Technologies, “By allowing hospitals to easily find a patient implanted with a recalled device we are increasing response time and saving lives.”

It also significantly improves efficiency in identifying recalled devices that may still be on the shelf. “Three years ago, the maker of a surgical clip called the Hem-o-lok issued an urgent recall notice warning doctors to stop using the fasteners on living kidney donors. It said the clips could dislodge in their bodies, with “serious, even life-threatening consequences… Last October a surgeon in Brooklyn used one of the clips to tie off Michael King’s renal artery when he donated a kidney to his ailing wife. Twelve hours later, the clip popped off. King bled to death internally in the hospital as his wife lay helplessly nearby. He was 29 (New York, AP, October 9, 2009).” UDITracker® alerts hospital staff when a recall has occurred and provides detailed location information to remove them quickly off the shelf.

UDITracker® offers hospitals a cost effective solution to meet these challenges while increasing OR efficiency.
